What a great cowboy song - chords and lyrics for ukulele, very simple to play!
GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY - for Ukulele
Em G 1. An old cowpoke went riding out one hot and windy day, Em G Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way, Em When all at once a mighty herd of red-eyed cows he saw, Am Em A plowin through the ragged skies, and up the cloudy draw. CHORUS: Em G Em Am Em Yip-i-ya-a, Yip-i-ya-o, Ghost riders in the sky. 2. Their brands were still on fire and their hoofs were made of steel. Their horns were black and shiny and their hot breath he could feel. A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky. For as he saw the riders comin hard, he could hear their mournful cry. 3. Their face were gaunt, their eyes were blurred, Their shirts all soaked with sweat, They're riding hard to catch that herd, but they ain't caught him yet. They've got to ride forevermore on the range up in the sky, On horses snorting fire and as they ride, I hear them cry. 4. And as the riders loped on by he heard one call his name, If you want to save your soul from hell a ridin on the range, Then cowboy better change your ways or with us you will ride, Trying to catch the devil's herd across the endless skies.
Thank you for posting this. I'm traveling to D.C. in April with a van load of veterans (11 hour drive) and I've been asked to bring my 'ukulele to help keep the driver awake. This is going into the trip songbook.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the work you do having all the tips for beginners.
I play this song like this... I find it's easier for me to sing, and easier uke fingerings for beginners. Oh, and I use these lyrics, which work well for kids. :D
ReplyDeleteGhost Chickens in the Sky
Am C
A chicken farmer went out one dark and windy day
Am C

Am F
When all at once a rotten egg hit him in the eye
Am F Am
It was the sight he dreaded, ghost chickens in the sky
C Am
Buck buck buuuuck, squawk aquawk cluck
F Am
Ghost chickens in the sky
This farmer had these chickens since he was twenty four,
Working for the Colonel for thirty years or more
Killing all these chickens and sending them to fry.
And now they want revenge, ghost chickens in the sky.
Their beaks were black and shining their eyes were burning red
They had no meat or feathers these chickens they were dead.
They picked the farmer up and he died by the claw
They cooked him extra crispy... (pause for dramatic effect) and ate him with coleslaw.
Chorus
Ghost chickens in the sky... SQUAWK!
Nice one Robert! lol
ReplyDeleteHere's the rarely covered 4th verse of Ghost Chickens:
ReplyDeleteSo [Am]let this song remind you, if [C]you want eternal peace
[Am]Don't raise harmless poultry, for [C]cookin' up in [E7]grease
Re[Am]member don't raise animals, that you will some day kill
For [F]chickens may come haunt you... but tofu never [Am]will
The parody by Dread Pirate Robert, and the extended verse by Ken, are outstanding! I took the liberty of combining the two, with a few changes, and here is the result:
ReplyDelete[Am] A chicken farmer walked outside one [C] dark and windy day
[Am] And by the coop he rested as he [C] went along his way
[Am] When all at once a rotten egg flew right into his eye
[F] It was the sight he dreaded most -- [Am] ghost chickens in the sky!
Yippee-i-[C]-ay, yippee-i-[Am]-oh. [F] Ghost chickens in the [Am] sky!
This farmer had raised chickens since the age of twenty four,
a-workin’ with the Colonel for thirty years or more
He’s been killin’ all those chickens and sending them to fry.
And now they want complete revenge, ghost chickens in the sky!
Their beaks were black and shining and their eyes were burning red
They had no meat or feathers ‘cuz these chickens they were dead!
They tore apart that farmer with frightful beak and claw
Then cooked him extra crispy... (pause for dramatic effect)
and ate him with coleslaw!
Yippee-i-[C]-ay, yippee-i-[Am]-oh. [F] Ghost chickens in the [Am] sky!
[Am] So farmers, a reminder, if you [C] want eternal peace
[Am] Choose milk and eggs and vegetables, not [C] chickens fried in grease.
[Am] Avoid a henpecked future -- zombie chickens can’t be killed.
[F] Dead poultry might attack you – but [Am] soybeans never will!
Yippee-i-[C]-ay, yippee-i-[Am]-oh. [F] Ghost chickens in the [Am] sky!
(Repeat “Ghost chickens in the sky” twice more, with high note at end)
