Ukulele fans may want to keep an eye on the upcoming SpaceX launch on 15 September 2021 - because Chris Sembroski is taking a custom designed Martin ukulele with him on the mission. And all for a very good cause too!

Martin Ukuleles got in touch with Got A Ukulele to share details of the three day orbiting mission in which astronaut Sembroski will perform in space. When he returns, the instrument, signed by the whole crew, will be auctioned to benefit the St Jude Children's Research Hospital and the mission will also be featured on an upcoming Netflix documentary.
With shades of that oh so famous Konter Ukulele that made it to the North Pole, the uke of choice here is another Martin Soprano called the 'Martin Inspiration 4' after the space mission. It's a solid sinker mahogany soprano (a sustainable choice) and has been inlaid with the mission patch on the fingerboard by Brent Williams. This isn't a space first for Martin either - the first guitar to go to space was a Martin Backpacker carried on Space Shuttle Columbia by astronaut Pierre Thout!

The mission, Inspiration4 is the world's first all civilian mission to orbit and will be commanded by Jared Isaacman. Launching from Kennedy Space Center, the mission is named in recognition of the four person crew who are all raising awareness and funds for St Jude's. They aim to raise $200 million!
