Oh, and please - don't get too bothered if you disagree with a review - these are just one man's subjective opinion (which is the ONLY way to review something.. I find it odd when people get annoyed by subjectivity..) If you have the same uke and love it, then that is cool too... naturally. In fact - this rant on the subject may interest you..

**Important notes about the ukulele reviews**
I am often asked 'how the overall scores work'. The really simple way to consider them is...
Scores in 9s - absolutely essential and recommended by me
Scores in 8s - recommended by me - minor issues
Scores in 7s - reasonable, but some bigger issues you may need to be mindful of. Doesn't get a full recommendation but may suit you
Scores in 6s - as per 7s, but much bigger issues leading me towards suggesting you avoid unless it absolutely floats your boat and you can deal with setup issues
Scores 5s or below - avoid like the plague!
Bear in mind, all my reviews are COMPLETELY IMPARTIAL and subjective and I don't do paid reviews, or good scores for free instruments (many sites do, not me). Subjective because they are one persons opinion and personal preference always comes into play (I do point out where views are subjective though and those that are objective.) And this is also not one of those dreaded 'uke reviews' sites which have just used Amazon reviews hoping you will click and earn them affiliate revenues- these are real reviews! They are made up about 50% of ukuleles loaned to me by shops and brands with the other 50% bought by me with proceeds from the adverts on the site (it's the reason the site HAS to run adverts - to bring you more reviews). In either case I say so in the review. On rare occasions a brand (particularly with cheap instruments) decides its not cost effective to ship a ukulele back so they don't collect it. These are either donated to local school, given to ukulele raffles for charity or on sold on to buy more ukes for review which, one way or another then end up going to charity. Sorry to go on about that, but some people do like to claim that I work for uke brands or a uke shops - I really DO NOT! In fact reviews that do that are utterly pointless.
I am in touch with all leading brands, so if a brand is missing from the list I will let you draw your own conclusions as to why! I suspect some are concerned with honesty..

I have been using a great tuner for Android (don't know if there's an iPhone version), called DaTuner. It is a chromatic tuner which is remarkably easy to use and very accurate. The free version is great, but there is also a paid version with more bells and whistles.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone heard a banjo ukulele by a company called Broadway or a company with a model called broadway. It looks very old. the back is from a good quality wood with RKO radio shapes cut out.

I was wondering if you could help me out as to why there's very little coverage on this blog and others regarding ukuleles produced by companies famous for making guitars like Fender, Martin, Cordoba, Oscar Schmidt, etc. I did see one Martin review, but none of the others (unless I missed them). Are those types of ukuleles typically frowned upon? Can you offer insight there? Thank you again.

ReplyDeleteBecause I have asked them multiple times and they have thus far not responded with any assistance. 95% of reviews are loaned to me by brands. Oscar Schmidt have not. Make of that what you will
ReplyDelete.prig - there are som eexceptions, but generally speaking I am not a fan of guitar brands making ukuleles. They are usually heavy, over built (built like guitars) and less than pleasing. Fender, Cordoba, OS fit into that category. A great exception is Martin - they have a terrific following and make wonderful ukuleles. Certainly nobody is frowning at Martin!

ReplyDeleteLike we say in the Netherlands, just to barge in, I am missing something. World celebrated guitar luthier Jean L'arrivee has a line of Ukes called Leho. I do wonder how they compete or compare in your vast list. I would say these need to be excellent, looking at his guitars and thus I am interested. Having said that I an also eyeballing a flight princess sophia at a very good discount(not the effects one)
I like to sponsor a local shop, but he does not have Leho in house, so I would need to go from pictures, and hardly any reviews.
The flight would not be sponsoring a local shop, but a bax-shover. This model did recieve good reviews.
Looking forward to your opinion on Leho vs the flight.

The Model "Fame Roundbody" is supposed to be extremely similar to Travel Ukuleles made by Mahilele and Flight. The "Fame UKE-S BW" is also dirt cheap. I would appreciate your insight. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'd also be keen on an opinion regarding Fame ukes - a lot of schools are going to be interested in these as a cheaper alternative to Octopus and Makala, and it's be good to know what your take on them is in comparison to Mahalo, Martin Smith, Gear4Music, and other assorted novelty firewood...
DeleteDear Barry, Thanks for the amazing work reviewing all these ukuleles. My very first ukulele was a cheap soprano 2 years ago, which did not sound very well. I now have a tenor from a better brand which sounds quite well, thanks to what I learned reading your reviews. I also did an interesting experiment lately, which I wondered if you would also try: I bought a DIY kit for a basswood-laminate soprano, dirt cheap as you can find on Amazon. I assembled, carefully measuring the distance for the strings. I sanded down the nut and the saddle to have acceptable action (repeated 3 times, this was not part of the instructions) and installed decent strings (D'Addario Nyltech). I did not paint nor varnished it, only did some marking on the side of the neck. Still sounds like laminate, but much better than my first soprano! Indeed, it sounds... acceptable. Maybe we should do this with kids, to help them understand how these instruments work. I would be curious to read your review of such DIY ukulele.

The current version of the Montecito is made of Laminated Acacia, but thanks to your review I figured out that the first version was made of Koa (Solid Top and laminated sides and back!) I also share your website to friends that want to buy a new Uke... because I found it the best source of information of Ukes!
